Wonderful bastard – ruff
Ruff became an iconic live bait in catching not only pike, but even a good perch caught on a ruff.
In general, a ruff is considered to be not very attractive to a predator live bait. Only the burbot is bleeding at the sight and smell of this prickly and slimy representative of perches. For a nocturnal predator there is no tastier fish than a ruff, despite its thorns and snotty.
Pike and perch on a ruff
But once we were faced with a situation where the ruff became a symbolic live bait in catching not only pike, but even a good perch caught the ruff. Probably, the reason for such a predator attraction to ruffs was the complete absence of a medium-sized “white” fish in these places. Where she went is incomprehensible. But when Andrei and I settled down in the narrow channel next to the dugout in the evening to catch live bait, then where there were no problems with catching roach and perch before, only ruffs would bite. There is nothing to choose from. They left them in mesh canals, which were specially made for the diameter of the hole. I lowered it under the ice and don’t have to think about the fact that water can freeze in an ordinary cane and live bait suffocate.
I advise you to read: Fried hillock – The history of its name. Where to catch. What kind of fish can be caught. How to get there.
We spent the night in a warm, heated dugout, noted the arrival in familiar places near the Fried mound. The receiver purred in the dugout, it smelled of fresh spruce spruce branches, set on bunks, alder smoke, stewed potatoes and garlic salsa. It was warm in my soul and soft from the drunk one hundred grams. Plans were made for tomorrow. They thought to look for roach and perch closer to the Fried mound. There was always a trifle caught. But I had to be content with some ruffs in the morning as well. Did not take live bait fish in the area and that’s it. It’s like a pestilence. But, most likely, a predator just walked around and dispersed a small fish, or maybe it ate the roach and perch so that the remaining fish had to be looked for in the afternoon with fire.
Does the ruff fit on live bait
We decided for the test to set the girders along the flooded channel of the Rutka river, which is higher than the Fried hillock, if you look along the course of the flooded river, that is, closer to its mouth. Here, even the riverbed was then visible. It could be identified by the trees that once rustled with foliage along the banks of the Rutka. Now they stood as a silent wall of birch, oak and maple corpses, and the river was a snowy clean strip among these dry trees. Then, for several seasons, I put up a casket and always caught pike. And in the snag along the former shores it sometimes got to the bite of a rather large perch. Then the local fisherman Sashka even pillaged this section for me along the Rutka channel, around its turn, they say, Sanya should come from the city. Put aside the vents. The namesake disappeared in one spring in these places, having fallen under the ice. It also happens.
This morning we did not wait for the predator
Ruff did not inspire confidence as bait. There was, of course, experience using ruffs as live bait, but their predators more often avoided it. Only burbot regularly sat on hooks with a sharp ruff or with live fish.
They sat with Andrei, watched the day flare up, and yesterday’s plans seemed unrealizable projects of idealists. But what is it? Suddenly, a flag “caught fire” among the line of zergirls exposed along the edge – the former bank of the river. We go to the gear. The coil does not rotate. So there’s nowhere to hurry.
Walking up to the zergil, I take up the fishing line. There are no jerks, but the fishing line slowly goes through your fingers, sometimes on the contrary, weakening and rising up. Uh, this is not a live bait fishing line, but some kind of indecisive predator. We have to wait … But then the fishing line slid down and my hand felt a decisive pull. It’s time … I hook and drag the perch onto the ice. You can’t say that it’s very large, but somewhere in a pound. And most importantly, the perch took on a ruff. The first time I see this. Perch usually serve tender tops, bleak or roach, and then a clot of mucus and a clump of thorns. Starved, you see, “sailor.” It’s my fault. It was impossible to completely exterminate the living creatures. It is also necessary to leave for “later”.
