Catching pike in the grass
A spotted predator often chooses hunting areas densely overgrown with aquatic vegetation. In the spring, in such places, the water warms up much faster than in the riverbed or in the pit of the reservoir. Therefore, in the thicket of old reeds, rich in insects and warm water, comes a different small fish, and after it – and predators. In autumn, small fish and predators also gather in shallow bays with already withering vegetation, only now in order to bask in the sun of “Indian summer” before the onset of cold weather. In summer, pike hunt here for the same reason as in other seasons, that is, because of the abundance of food supply – small fish. Only now the pike enters the grassy shallow waters early in the morning or at night, and during the day stands in the shade of the banks or thickets of water lilies at a depth.
Fishermen call such places “frogs”
And indeed here you can often hear the croaking of frogs and the rumbling of toads. If we add here hemp sticking out of the water and dry trees, which is not uncommon in the flood zone of the reservoir, then a complete illusion of the swamp is created. Meanwhile, at dawn in the grass, the blows of a hefty fish tail are heard every now and again, unless the mermaid has burst out or the Water coughing in the water …
To catch in such sturdy places, unobtrusive lures are required.
And, despite the inevitable hooks that are still inevitable, it is better if the lures are suspended on a relatively thin fishing line for a more natural movement. If we talk about spring, then for the most part silicone worms are suitable, which, being loose on the offset hook, also serve as natural prey for pikes. During this period, when meltwater fills meadows and coastal shallow waters, pikes eagerly feed on live worms crawling out of the mink. Silicone worms on an offset hook, the sting of which is recessed into the body of the bait or is in a special shelf, perfectly pass various obstacles in the form of grass and even snags.
In summer, edible rubber tails are widely used for fishing in aquatic vegetation. They are also mounted on an offset hook. If the bait has a shelf on the back, then the “offset” sting is inserted there or recessed into the body of the vibrotail. Recently received various simulations of shrimp and crayfish, also from edible rubber. This, of course, is something fantastic in appearance. There are no such crayfish and shrimp in wildlife. Nevertheless, pikes react excitedly to these aliens from another world and grab them no worse, or even better than traditional silicone baits. In addition to various smells of crayfish, mackerel, shrimp, these edible rubber baits are also saturated with salt. Oddly enough, this also attracts pike. In addition, such baits are made harder due to salt. And since long casts are not required in the grass, such baits can be cast without loading, which makes them more natural in movement. If you put the load, it is not heavier than 3 grams, given the fact that the depth in the “frogs” is sometimes a little more than a meter. For fishing over aquatic vegetation, in the gaps and windows among it, a jerking method of posting is mainly used – twitching. The bait, jerking along the vegetation, falling into clean windows and ducts among the grass, will certainly cause a pike to bite, no matter how inactive the pike.
